The American IdeologyA West Fargo native has published a book about the political philosophies of the founding fathers that, two months from a presidential election, seems especially relevant today.

The book, “The American Ideology,” was written by Brian Vanyo, a 1994 graduate of West Fargo High School who spent several years in the U.S. Navy and currently works with the Defense Intelligence Agency in Virginia Beach, Va.

Vanyo started thinking about the book during the 2009 debate over the Affordable Care Act, when he says the constitution became “almost an afterthought.”

“It didn’t seem to me that either party had a firm understanding of the basic fundamental rights taught to us and instituted under the constitution,” Vanyo says.

And though he admits his own political leanings are conservative, Vanyo says he tried to present the founding fathers’ political teachings in an “informative, non-partisan, historical way.”

In the book, Vanyo examines the philosophers who motivated and inspired the founding fathers, such as John Locke and William Blackstone, and how those philosophies helped shape the constitution.

“The American Ideology” has so far been endorsed by, among others, 2012 Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, who wrote, “Anyone who cares about the future of American must read this book.”

“The American Ideology” is available at Barnes&Noble.com and Amazon.com.
